Chapter 5

Anna

It feels so good to be in Richard’s arms, to know that he feels the same way about me as I do about him. I press myself against him and just drift.

“What the hell is this?”

In a horrifying instant, that dreamy feeling vaporizes, and we break apart in surprise as we wheel around in the direction of the voice. Of my brother’s voice. He stands in the doorway to the kitchen, fists clenched and face tight with some mixture of rage and embarrassment, as though he can tell what we were doing just a minute ago.

Richard holds his hands up submissively as Ian storms forward. “Ian, listen to me for a minute, I—”

But Ian doesn’t want to listen. “My sister,” he seethes. “You’ve known her since she was in braces and you’re…”

The hands drop and Richard’s eyes narrow. “Watch your mouth,” he warns.

Whatever slim tether my brother had on his temper snaps, and he swings wildly, clipping Richard across the cheek. He stumbles back with an angry hiss, clasping a hand to his injured cheek while he straightens and meets my brother’s furious stare again.

“No.” I slash an arm through the air between them and step forward, directly in front of Richard. “You are not going to assault Richard—your best friend—over me.”

Ian just stares, his chest heaving, and I sigh and try again. “Ian, this isn’t what you think.”

“Isn’t it?” he counters, his tone cutting and vicious. “So I guess he didn’t just have his hands up your skirt in the middle of Mom and Dad’s kitchen.”

I look down at the hem of my dress and see that it’s still rucked up a bit—not high enough to reveal anything, but I look disheveled, things slightly off-kilter. And my response is what Ian was waiting for, a silent confirmation that we were up to something in here. He shakes his head with a derisive snort.

“Just get out, Richard.” He points to the door. “Get the fuck out of here.”

I step forward again. “And what if he doesn’t? Are you going to punch him again? Punch me?”

Ian flinches, his face clouding with shame. Good, I think angrily. But he surprises me then, taking another step forward instead of retreating out of the room, away from Richard.

“You need to leave,” Ian insists. “Now.”

I open my mouth to shoot him down again, but Richard touches my arm gently. I turn to him, and the sight of that swollen cheekbone and his own flushed, angry face threatens what little composure I have left.

“I’ll leave for now,” he says, glancing over at Richard before he looks back at me and runs a warm hand down my bare arm. “This isn’t over, though.”

And that’s it—no goodbye kiss, no lingering hug or sweet farewell. He just turns and leaves, leaving me frozen in the kitchen while my brother stares at me, still breathing hard with rage.

“I’ll tell Mom and Dad that Richard had a work emergency,” he finally says, then hesitates before he adds, “You aren’t going back there on Monday.
